Since January 1st, 2023, the SMIC has seen a new evolution. A new increase that raises it from €11.27 to €11.52 gross per hour, representing a 2.22% change.
Let's discover together what this means for your purchasing power.
Definition of SMIC (Minimum Interprofessional Growth Wage)
As a reminder, the Minimum Interprofessional Growth Wage, more commonly known as the SMIC, is the minimum hourly wage below which it is forbidden to pay an employee, regardless of the form of their remuneration (by time, output, task, piecework, commission, or tip). Since its creation in 1950, the SMIC has undergone numerous evolutions, which have helped to protect the most modest workers and maintain a certain standard of living for all.

*Several evolutions of the gross hourly SMIC have been made during the year. The latest value to date is shown.
Why does the SMIC increase every year?
Usually, the SMIC is revalued every January 1st. The evolution of the SMIC takes into account inflation for the 20% of households with the lowest incomes and half of the gain in purchasing power of the average hourly wage of manual and clerical workers.
However, automatic revaluations may occur during the year. For example, in 2021 and 2022, there were several increases in the SMIC to combat inflation. Thus, if the consumer price index increases by at least 2% compared to the index observed during the last evolution of the SMIC, a new revaluation is possible.
Example in 2022, the SMIC experienced three consecutive evolutions:
January 1st, 2022: €10.57 per hour, or €1603.12 gross monthly.
May 1st, 2022: €10.85 per hour, or €1645.58 gross monthly.
August 1st, 2022: €11.07 per hour, or €1678.95 gross monthly.
The SMIC therefore increased by €75.83 in the space of a year!
At Staffmatch, the SMIC value is automatically adjusted. You don't need to do anything!
Is there a difference in the SMIC when doing temporary work?
No, there is no difference. The SMIC for temporary work is equal to the legal SMIC. Thus, the monthly salary of a temporary worker is calculated by multiplying the number of hours worked by €11.52 (SMIC rate in May 2023).
For example, if a temporary worker completes an 80-hour assignment paid at the SMIC, the calculation will be as follows: 80 x €11.52 = €921.60 gross (the calculation does not include end-of-mission bonuses).
How to improve your purchasing power in an inflationary context?
In addition to the increase in the SMIC, the Group launched a new loyalty program at the end of 2022. In a strong inflationary economic context, a bonus of €100,000 was distributed by Staffmatch to more than 3,500 temporary workers so that they could enjoy it as they wished on the online store. This online store offers temporary workers thousands of everyday products at advantageous prices.
This program is a real boost to the purchasing power of temporary workers.
So, like them, don't hesitate any longer!
