The sectors that will recruit the most temporary workers in 2023
Temporary work is a rapidly growing activity that always offers assignments. The offers are very varied and concern many professions. Some professions are better represented than others.
In France, the sectors that recruited the most temporary workers in 2022 were agriculture, construction (BTP), industrial production, and logistics.
Discover which temporary jobs are recruiting the most for this new year.

The Rise of Temporary Work: More and More Job Offers

Temporary work is an extremely flourishing activity. According to the DARES (Directorate for Research, Studies and Statistics), it has seen a strong recovery since the COVID-19 pandemic. Temporary work has experienced a 2.2% increase since last year. According to an INSEE (National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies) study from October 2019, temporary work represents a turnover of over 31 billion euros!

Some Figures on Temporary Job Offers

According to the Hellowork platform, many temporary job offers were posted during 2022. According to their statistics, 1.9 million job offers were published in the first half of 2022. According to the DARES, at the end of August 2022, 775,400 people were employed on a temporary basis. However, it is important to specify that the average duration of an assignment is one month. This totals nearly 21 million contracts.

Professions Attracting Many Candidates with Different Profiles

The supply of temporary jobs is very diverse: it covers all professions. While logistics, sales, and construction are on the podium, they are closely followed by personal services. In fact, the dynamism of sectors is directly related to economic challenges. This is how the pandemic saw the healthcare sector make a leap in temporary work, while personal services showed stability.

The Sectors That Will Recruit the Most Temporary Workers in 2023: The Podium

The sectors that require a lot of labor are the best represented:

The Agri-food Sector: Significant Labor Needs

According to the FNSEA (National Federation of Farmers' Unions), the labor needs of the agricultural sector represented 8.4% of recruitment projects in 2022, across all professions. According to the employment observatory of this union, the needs represent 275,000 recruitment projects. However, 94% of these positions are seasonal contracts. Pickers, arborists, and winegrowers are the main professions sought after.

Industry: The Number 2 Sector Recruiting Temporary Workers

Industry and production form a sector that uses a lot of temporary work. According to INSEE, 9% of industrial companies use temporary workers. However, this sector represents a very significant part of French salaried employment.
While industrial production is in second place, it actually represents more than 40% of the temporary workforce.

Construction (BTP): The Third Most Demanding Sector for Temporary Workers

Construction is very likely the most complex sector to automate. This sector suffered particularly from the health crisis. However, the BTP sector has managed to stabilize and is still one of the areas with a high rate of temporary worker recruitment in 2022.
This is a sector that is experiencing a labor shortage, as deplored by the president of the French Building Federation at the beginning of 2022. According to INSEE, the BTP sector represents 19.3% of the share of recruitment in temporary work.

The Sectors That Recruit Temporary Workers in 2023

Other sectors are also very present in temporary recruitment. These include logistics and transport, as well as self-service employees. These areas have in common their belonging to the distribution chain. The hotel and catering industry also needs these profiles.

Logistics and Transport: Recurring Partners of Temporary Work

According to Pôle emploi, the logistics and transport professions lack attractiveness. They have a reputation for being demanding. However, the salaries are very attractive. This is why this activity is gradually turning to temporary work.
Transport companies are lacking delivery drivers, as well as forklift operators and warehouse workers.
Other professionals coveted by companies are order pickers. Inventory clerks and handlers are also in high demand, as are truck drivers. For Pôle emploi, the transport and logistics professions are among the drivers of temporary work.

Self-Service Employees: Many Recruitment Opportunities

Self-service employees are the employees responsible for stocking shelves in supermarkets. Again, these are jobs that require a lot of handling. According to a DARES study, mobility in these positions is very high. DARES speaks of a rate higher than 180%. It is therefore obvious that these positions need to be filled very quickly. Temporary work allows for emergency hiring.

Hotel and Catering: A Sector Offering Many Temporary Recruitment Opportunities

Jobs in the restaurant and hotel industry are subject to seasonality. In addition, these are professions that require managing fluctuations in clientele at the end of the week. The possibility of using extras is common practice. However, more and more catering companies are turning to temporary employment agencies to manage their occasional staffing needs. Here again, turnover is significant due to the nature of the job.

Healthcare and Personal Services Professions: Many Temporary Job Offers

The professions of personal assistance and care have for several years been particularly well represented in temporary work activities. They have been joined by medical professions. Temporary workers in this sector are particularly sought after due to the shortage of healthcare personnel.

Temporary Service and Personal Assistance Activities

The personal service sector is a branch of the tertiary sector that is showing great dynamism. Many positions are not filled. Moreover, due to the specificity of this profession, temporary work is taking an increasing share in this sector. According to an INSEE survey, the number of dependent seniors will gradually increase by 2030. However, this sector already has a significant number of unfilled job offers.

Nursing Assistants: Particularly Sought-After Profiles in Temporary Work

In all regions of France, the shortage of healthcare personnel is being felt. All professions in this sector are concerned: from nursing assistants to nurses, including more manual jobs such as hospital porters. Today, medical temporary work is trying to meet the lack of personnel in the healthcare sector.
Given the current situation, this sector will have a growing weight in temporary work.

Management Positions in Sectors Recruiting Through Temporary Employment Agencies

Temporary work is often associated with little or no qualifications or diplomas. However, this is not always the case. While temporary work is primarily aimed at a young and unqualified public, more and more executives are being recruited on a temporary basis.

Executives and Temporary Work

Executives are tempted by the experience of temporary work. The most sought-after professions concern human resources management. These very high-level executives carry out a specific mission in a user company. This activity is called interim management. The salary of an interim manager can reach 1,000 euros per day. Of course, the profiles of these temporary workers are commensurate with these amounts.

Doctors: A New Type of Temporary Worker

France is affected by the phenomenon of medical deserts. Many hospitals lack practitioners. As a result, many doctors, often young, choose to work temporarily before settling down. To be able to fulfill this type of mission, they must hold a valid medical degree. For certain activities, the practitioner must also be registered with the medical council. This sector, suffering from a shortage, is currently experiencing strong growth in temporary hiring.
In 2023, temporary work has become a choice more than a necessity for workers. The advantage of temporary work is that it allows you to find a job very quickly, regardless of your level of education.
