What Does BTP Mean?
The Building and Public Works sector is one of the pillars of the French economy.
In 2022, Pôle Emploi (the French employment agency) stated that there were 265,090 recruitment projects in the BTP sector, and that in 2023, we will continue to see an increase.
BTP refers to all construction and infrastructure activities and trades in the public and private sectors.
From the construction, maintenance, and renovation of buildings or public infrastructures such as roads or bridges, the BTP sector encompasses many trades, making it a very dynamic sector with significant job opportunities.
Varied Fields of Activity
There are different fields of activity within the BTP sector. We notably distinguish 3 main fields of activity, which are accessible at different levels of education:
- Structural Work (Gros œuvre): Structural work refers to all construction work that concerns the structure and solidity of the building. This includes earthworks, foundations, masonry, framework, roofing, and insulation. In other words, it is the work carried out to ensure the stability and resistance of the building.
- Finishing Work (Second œuvre): Finishing work encompasses all the work necessary to make the building habitable and functional, and which allows for the finishing and embellishment of the structure. This area includes electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, flooring and wall coverings, painting, and air conditioning, for example.
- Site Management and Equipment Operators: Site management and equipment operators include all the management and coordination tasks of a construction site.
This area thus includes the professions of site foreman, works supervisor, quantity surveyor, but also construction equipment operators (excavator, bulldozer, crane, etc.).
The work that allows for the planning, coordination, and supervision of all construction work on a site.

An Abundance of Job Offers: Temporary Work in the BTP Sector
Lately, the BTP sector has been facing a labor shortage, particularly for the trades of carpenter, equipment operator, or building engineer.
The health crisis has disrupted this sector, leaving many construction projects unfinished.
Despite these difficulties, the BTP sector recorded a 20.6% increase in construction sites at the end of 2022, which is quite encouraging.
Given the labor shortage, job offers in the BTP sector are abundant. Companies are constantly looking for personnel and often resort to temporary work to meet their staffing needs.
Projects like the construction of the 2024 Olympic Village are shaping up to be a significant resource!
According to Pôle Emploi, recruitment in the BTP sector represents about a third of the job openings in the labor market between 2019 and 2030!
