Home Care Assistant

Missions: Home Care Assistant

The home care assistant supports elderly people, individuals with disabilities, or those who have lost some independence in their daily lives, helping them remain at home in good conditions. The role involves assisting with everyday activities while preserving the person’s autonomy as much as possible.
On a daily basis, the assistant helps with essential tasks such as getting up and going to bed, personal hygiene, dressing, and preparing or assisting with meals. The home care assistant also ensures the person’s comfort and safety by adapting the level of support to their health condition and abilities.
The professional may also help with everyday household tasks. This can include cleaning the home, preparing meals, doing shopping, or accompanying the person to medical appointments or outings. These activities help maintain a stable and reassuring living environment.
Beyond practical support, the home care assistant also plays an important social role. Conversation, presence, and attentive listening help reduce the isolation that many dependent people experience. The professional also observes changes in the person’s situation and can alert relatives or healthcare and social care teams when necessary.

Skills and training

It is possible to become a home care assistant without a diploma in some cases, particularly when starting as a home support worker. However, employers often prefer candidates who have completed training in the personal care sector.
The most recognized qualification is the State Diploma of Educational and Social Support Worker (DEAES), which prepares professionals to support elderly people, individuals with disabilities, or those who have lost independence. This training provides the foundations of the profession: assistance with daily activities, social support, and hygiene and safety practices.
Other training programs can also lead to this profession, such as the vocational baccalaureate in care and personal services (ASSP) or certain professional certifications focused on home care services.
In all cases, field experience plays an important role. Internships or initial assignments help develop the practical skills required to support people who have lost autonomy.

How much does a home care assistant earn?

The salary of a home care assistant depends on several factors: the employer (association, home care company, or private employer), experience, and the number of hours worked.
At the beginning of a career, the salary is generally around the minimum wage, which is approximately €1,803.23 gross per month for full-time work. With experience, the salary may increase slightly, particularly thanks to bonuses or additional pay linked to working hours (evenings, weekends, or public holidays).
In some organizations, travel allowances may also be added when the professional visits several clients during the day.

What are the working conditions of a home care assistant?

Home care assistants usually work in the homes of the people they support. Their day is often organized around several visits to different individuals, with schedules that vary depending on needs.
The job requires good physical condition and flexibility. Interventions may take place early in the morning, in the evening, or during weekends. Despite these constraints, the profession offers a strong human dimension based on support and relationships with the people being assisted.

What career opportunities are available for a home care assistant?

With experience, a home care assistant may move into positions with greater responsibility, such as team leader or care coordinator within a home care organization.
Some professionals also choose to pursue additional training to move into other roles within the healthcare and social care sector, such as nursing assistant or educational and social support worker.
As the personal care sector continues to grow, employment prospects for home care assistants remain generally strong.
